In late 2010 a deep freeze swept through the valley damaging many of the vines that give us our favorite Walla Walla wines from year to year. For the 2011 growing season we chose to focus our energy on helping our young vineyard recoup from the stressful freeze rather than farm it to produce a crop for winemaking. Fortunately we were able to procure fruit from another vineyard in the rocks, just a "stone's throw" from our estate property. We are extremely happy with the result. Our 2011 Stone's Throw Syrah is a beautiful wine possessing all of the same characterstics we've come to know and love from the rocks area of the Walla Walla Valley.
These bottles contain the second vintage off our estate vineyard in the rocks. A mild growing season resulted in a beautiful, well balanced wine with relatively low alcohol and amazing character for what was still a young vineyard in 2010. This vintage was a significant mile market for Proper, as it represented our first public release after starting the venture more than five years previous.
These bottles contain the first wine ever produced off of our estate vineyard in the rocks! We co-fermented our Syrah with 3% Viognier (a common blending practice in Northern Rhone) for elegance and added aromatics, and we aged the wine in neutral oak for 18 months prior to bottling. The intent from start to finish was to let the vineyard’s personality and qualities come through in the glass. We are thrilled with the result and look forward to seeing how this estate Syrah evolves from year to year. We’re only releasing 30 cases of this “first edition”…it won’t last long.
